Ipsen is set to join the ranks of a number of Boston-based biotechs, by setting up shop in Kendall Square.
The move means that the French company will pull a number of staff from its current North American headquarters in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, to relocate it to Boston.
The Kendall Square office will join two further headquarters in Oxford, England, and its global base in Paris, France.
As part of the decision, Ipsen’s existing site in the area will be expanded by 250 people over the next few years.
“We are entering into a new era of innovation and growth for Ipsen as a leading global biotech company. By bringing our headquarters to Cambridge, we will build a sustainable innovation engine to advance opportunities for our employees and our overall business,” expalined Richard Paulson, CEO of Ipsen North America. “The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) has been instrumental throughout this process, and we look forward to continuing to partner with them as we grow our footprint even further in Cambridge and ultimately address patient needs.”
According to Boston Globe, the MLSC had promised $1.2 million in tax incentives to allow for the biotech to bring its HQ to the state.
Ipsen already had a significant presence in the state, with a manufacturing facility based in Kendall Square and offices based nearby.
Explaining the decision further, the press release on the announcement revealed part of the reasoning behind the decision was to raise the profile of biotech, allowing it a better shot at hiring employees attracted to the biotech boom in the area.
