Stuart Rose has been named as the new chair of the Healthcare Communications Association (HCA), the first ever from the pharmaceutical industry.
The HCA was launched just under four years ago in order to promote higher standards of work between pharmaceutical companies and their agency partners in the field of healthcare communications, in particular PR and medical education.
Mr Rose, former UK commercial director of Elan will take over from current chair Angie Wiles for a period of two years and will lead the Association's championing of best practice, innovation and excellence in healthcare communications.
"Marketing is becoming a critical competitive differentiator in pharmaceuticals and as our customer base increases in diversity and complexity, the need to reach and influence through PR and medical education is growing," said Mr Rose.
He stressed that the HCA is an independent forum aimed at improving standards and making marketing influence "really count".
"I am delighted to be taking on this role and look forward to seeing the HCA grow further in both membership and what we deliver to members. It is those deliverables that could give members competitive edge," he added.
Mr Rose has 18 years experience working in marketing roles in some of the industry's biggest companies, including GlaxoSmithKline. He has been actively involved in developing the Evaluation Sub-Committee and the HCA Healthcare Evaluation Toolkit, aimed at benchmarking best practice.
The HCA also recently announced plans to open membership up to freelance healthcare communication practitioners and launch a formal constitution.
The Association currently has 12 pharmaceutical companies and 22 PR consultancies in its membership.
