Andy Davis, the high-profile managing director of Takeda UK is to leave the company.
Davis is best known for overseeing a radical restructure of the medium-sized company, making redundant the company's entire salesforce and rebuilding the firm around a new regional account manager system.
Davis has headed up the UK division of the Japanese pharmaceutical company for around five years and is understood to be leaving the industry for a position with Virgin – just the kind of consumer company Davis had sought to emulate at Takeda in its focus on meeting customer needs in innovative ways.
Davis was not available for comment, but a source at Takeda said his departure was completely amicable and confirmed Davis was looking for a "new challenge".
Takeda launched its network of regional account directors (RADs) in early 2005, after dismissing its entire salesforce of 168 a year earlier.
The company found sales of its lead products – diabetes treatment Actos and hypertension drug Amias – continued to rise despite no salesforce promoting them during the period.
Davis argued that large salesforces were unsustainable for medium-sized pharma companies, and said the aims of the restructure was to improve return on investment, respond more effectively to NHS needs, and to attract the best talent.
