Bosch Packaging Technology is planning to expand its position in the pharmaceutical processing equipment sector with the purchase of two of Oystar’s business units.

On April 27, Bosch signed two separate agreements with Oystar, one for the purchase of German drying and granulation equipment unit Hüttlin and another for UK tablet press and coating specialist Manesty.

In a statement, Bosch Packaging Technology president Friedbert Klefenz said that the aim was to help it become a “full-service provider” in process technology by adding to its strong position in primary packaging equipment.

“The two companies … support the strategic alignment of the division by complementing the upstream value-added chain,” he said.

Hüttlin and Manesty had combined sales of 49 million euros last year and together employ a little under 200 staff at sites in Schopfheim, Germany, and Knowsley in the UK. Around 70% of their sales are made in Europe, according to Bosch.

Parent company Oystar said that the sale would allow it to focus on its core and much larger businesses in primary and secondary packaging. The company has been undertaking a revamp of its international operations over the last 18 months or so, and earlier this year merged three US businesses into one packaging machine division.

“Having Bosch as their new owner equips our subsidiaries Hüttlin and Manesty well for the future,” said Oystar chairman Tom Graf.

“The companies can work together to extend their activities in the area of pharmaceuticals process technology, and successfully continue their growth course”, he added.
