AstraZeneca is proposing to elect the president of International Markets for MasterCard to stand as a non-executive director on its audit committee.

The firm’s board at its AGM on 24 April is to consider whether Ann Cairns is indeed the right choice to sit within AZ’s financial business unit, who will then immediately join the audit committee following approval.

Cairns has more than 20 years’ experience working in senior management positions across Europe and the US running global retail and investment banking operations. As the president of International Markets for MasterCard, she is responsible for the management of all markets and customer-related activities outside North America.

AZ says she is credited with building strong growth rates for the company, leading the rollout of innovation, and building new global partnerships with governments, telecomms firms and organisations such as the World Food Programme.

Prior to joining MasterCard in 2011 Cairns was head of the Financial Industry Group with Alvarez & Marsal in London, where she led the European team managing Lehman Brothers Holdings. Prior to that she was chief executive at Transaction Banking at ABN AMRO, and spent 15 years in senior operational positions at Citigroup.

At the start of her career Cairns spent time as an award-winning research engineer, culminating as the head of Offshore Engineer Planning for British Gas. Managing a team of more than 50 engineers, Cairns was the first woman qualified to work offshore in Britain.

AstraZeneca’s chairman Leif Johansson said: “I’m delighted to propose Ann Cairns for election to the AstraZeneca board. Ann will bring more than twenty years’ in-depth financial and international business experience to the board and we look forward to welcoming her.”
