As revealed in correspondence with the California Employment Development Department, Amgen plans to axe 172 staff positions across the US, including at its global headquarters located in Thousand Oaks, California, where it currently employs 5,125 employees as of 2017.
It is thought, however, that the true number of total job cuts may come in lower than this, given that some of the affected staff have been offered other positions within Amgen, while all affected individuals will have the option to apply for positions posted by the company.
“We presently expect these (employment) separations to be permanent,” Amgen said in its correspondence. “However, the entire facility is not being closed.”
“Like all companies, Amgen regularly evaluates and adjusts staffing levels to meet the needs of the business,” the company also noted. “While these decisions are never easy, we believe our ability to compete will be strengthened by a tighter focus on investments that can help bring important medicines to patients to treat serious, life-threatening illnesses.”
This is the second time since 2017 that the company has culled staff from its headquarters, after it cut just under 500 positions that year as it geared up to the opening of a new facility in Tampa, Florida.
