Allergan recalls eye drugs after complaints of blurred vision

Allergan has issued a recall for batches of eye ointments sold in the US, after customers complained of foreign bodies in the medicine.

Following customer complaints reporting a small black particle in the product, Allergan is recalling the ointment, retailing under the brands Refresh, Lacri-Lube and others.

This black particle, which is part of the cap, can be created by the action of unscrewing the cap from the aluminium tube, which potentially introduces the particle into the ointment.

Allergen has received 12 complaints of a foreign body in the eye, as well as reports of eye irritation, eye swelling and blurred vision.

The company will be contacting retailers and wholesalers who have been shipped the affected product to begin the recall, providing them with information on how to return the ointment by checking the lot number and expiration date which can be found on the bottom flap of the carton with the safety seal and on the crimp seal of the product tube.

Since Allergan and Actavis have partnered up to become Allergan, the company has already had to recall a product manufactured by both companies.

Earlier in the year, Actavis – which has changed its name to Allergan following a $66 billion buyout by the Irish pharma company – recalled batches of contraceptive pills due to packaging problems. It began recollecting 511,283 boxes of Lutera birth control pills after discovering their inserts were missing.

Allergan has been strengthening its commitment to producing branded drugs, including eye medications, ever since agreeing to partner up with Actavis last November. In July it emerged that Teva had made an approach to buy Allergan’s generics business for $40.5 billion.
