Social media guru Alex Butler has left Janssen to establish Social Moon, a digital-only marketing and comms agency for the healthcare and pharma industry.

Butler has been one of the most prominent exponents of the new media in his role as head of digital communications at Janssen UK, and latterly head of marketing communications and strategic marketing for the EMEA region.

He says his new venture will provide digital communication services to pharma and the healthcare industry that will include online advertising, digital marketing and social media – it will also uniquely offer online crisis management.

The Social Moon’s overall aim is to accelerate and simplify a business’s ability to be social online.

This is a tough task for pharma in Europe, where it is not allowed to market directly to patients. Consequently many firms are cautious about using social media, or uncertain of how it could help their businesses.

The Social Moon will soon launch a website based around a professional blog filled with comment, analysis and free resources to help clients manage their online strategy.

This will include a weekly ‘White Board Friday’ video series where Butler will help people understand and implement concepts and strategies including information architecture, mobile, games for health and social media strategy and evaluation.

Butler will partner with Aurora Healthcare Communications owners Neil Crump and Claire Eldridge, who will both act as advising partners and will be based out of Aurora’s London offices.

Butler said: “We have the experience to support clients from strategic design and process development through to delivery, implementation and management. We can work across an organisation to bring people together to make it happen.”

Butler’s work in digital has won numerous accolades in the last few years, and was part of the Janssen team which won several major prizes at this year’s PM Society’s Digital Awards.

He was also the recipient of the John Mack ‘Pharmaguy’ global social media pioneer award in October last year.
