The American College of Cardiology has cancelled its upcoming ACC.20 event with the World Congress of Cardiology due to concerns about the COVID-19 outbreak.

In a statement the College said that: “Our decision to cancel our flagship annual event was not taken lightly. The ACC has been closely monitoring updates and recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as state and local governments. In the last week, we’ve also learned of the increasing number of travel advisories and restrictions being placed on health care providers and hospitals and institutions in the U.S. and globally.

“The health, safety and well-being of our members, staff, exhibitors, faculty, and the patients we serve is of paramount importance. With an ever-increasing number of ACC members on the front lines of preparing and reacting to the COVID-19 outbreak, we believe it is in the best interest of everyone to cancel the meeting and ensure our members are able to do what they do best – help and heal.”

From the statement, it can be inferred this cancellation comes due to the fear of spreading the coronavirus, as similar large meetings of people are cancelled across the world, from conferences to sporting matches.

It appears the meeting has also been cancelled to free up the experts attending work on treating the spread of the virus. Heart disease in particular is one of the underlying conditions that many people who have died from coronavirus suffered with. Over 600,000 American a year died from heart disease, and the coronavirus could see these numbers increase.

Some of the event will be delivered online, with the specific details being announced by the college at a later date. It was set to host over 18,000 attendees, nearly 12,500 professional attendees, over 260 exhibitors as well as key opinion leaders from around the world.

The World Congress of Cardiology has been a key event on cardiovascular issues since 1950. It brings together thousands of cardiology professionals from all over the world with the common goal of reducing the global burden of cardiovascular disease. This is the first time the event has been cancelled in its 69-year history.
