The Academy of Medical Sciences has awarded £7.6m to support 62 early-career biomedical researchers across the UK, marking the largest single investment in its Springboard programme since it was established in 2015.
Each researcher, nominated by their host institutions, will receive between £100,000 and £125,000 in funding. In addition to financial support, the programme offers access to mentoring and tailored career development, helping researchers transition to research independence and deliver long-term impact.
The initiative – co-funded by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, Wellcome and the British Heart Foundation – aims to translate cutting-edge science into tangible health benefits.
Projects funded this year address a wide spectrum of healthcare challenges, including fertility, the use of artificial intelligence in disease prediction and gender-based disparities in neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease.
Professor James Naismith, vice-president (non-clinical) at the Academy of Medical Sciences, commented: “The breadth and ambition of these projects is remarkable. Each Springboard awardee brings forward-thinking approaches that will ultimately contribute to improved outcomes for patients and society.”
Since 2015, the Academy has invested £43.8m in Springboard, supporting over 350 researchers at a critical stage in their careers.
Science Minister Andrew Griffith (Lord Vallance) welcomed the funding, stating it would enable the UK to “continue to pioneer groundbreaking research and remain a global leader in medical science”.
Applications for the next round of Springboard funding will open in 2026.
