AAIPharma Services is planning to expand its contract analytics facility in Wilmington, North Carolina, with a new 40,000 sq. ft. laboratory and technology centre.

The new complex is designed to help AAIPharma push further into the lab services sector, according to the firm’s chief executive Pat Walsh, who said the expansion would allow the firm to boost its headcount by around 20 employees in the next quarter.

The Wilmington unit focuses on microbiology, analytical and physical chemistry services, including compendial/raw material testing and stability management, storage and testing.

In addition the investment in additional laboratory space, AAIPharma has also started to run a third shift at its manufacturing unit in Charleston, South Carolina, which focuses on the production of sterile parenteral drugs, and will add additional capacity there early in 2012.

The expansion comes at a time when four out of five biopharmaceutical companies are planning to either maintain or increase their level of outsourcing, said Walsh, citing a recent survey by Contract Pharma.

“We are building a new world class technology centre in Wilmington and expanding our Charleston manufacturing facility to increase capacity and efficiency,” commented Walsh, who also announced that the privately-held company posted record revenues up by 9% in the third-quarter of fiscal 2011.

The increase in revenues marks the continued upward trajectory of AAIPharma, which emerged from bankruptcy proceedings in 2006 thanks to its sales to private equity group Water Street Healthcare Partners.

– Meanwhile, AAIPharma has boosted its management team with the appointment of Kevin Flanagan, formerly president of Compass Pharma Services, to the position of vice president of packaging services.
