Fourteen PCTs have been given the go-ahead to develop new and innovative services and improve patient services through community pharmacists.

Local Pharmaceutical Services (LPS) pilots allow PCTs and community pharmacists to develop and improve the range and level of services available to local communities, including patient education and medicines management for older people.

Health Minister David Lammy said: "Each pilot has a dispensing element, but a number of pilots will provide a range of other services, such as services tailored for patients 75 and over, and training and education for patients, carers and pharmacists. LPS pilots provide PCTs with the flexibility to design services with patients' needs in mind, and ensure that services address local patient needs, while at the same time helping to deliver PCT priorities".
