Why do people refuse job offers?

The consequences of a senior executive refusing a job offer at the final stage of the recruitment process can be serious and costly, in both time and money.

Although job offer refusal in the UK is not as widespread amongst senior executives as it is for junior and middle managers – among whom refusal rates can average as high as 30% – research shows up to 12% still shy away at the final hurdle.

However, if potential issues are raised upfront and the company offers a competitive package, this figure decreases significantly. The issue is therefore well worth exploring in more depth, using subjective research findings and case studies to shed light on the professional, emotional and personal reasons for refusal and reveal how recruitment processes might be further improved.
