Making a sales pitch in the ‘war for talent’

When I joined Celltech (now part of UCB) over 20 years ago it was difficult to attract candidates who valued security above all else from a large pharmaceutical company into a biotech.

Today that has changed: there are no longer perceived 'safe havens' of employment; but other things are much unchanged. The 'war for talent' is a modern day reality, for instance.

The best people or those with rare skills are in comparative demand. In a high-performing sector where people really do make the difference, many companies are wooing the same people. And this applies regardless of whichever phase of the economic cycle we find ourselves in.

Therefore in most cases, companies do not make job offers to these individuals as much as sell them an opportunity. So why does anyone join any particular company? Usually they do so because the role meets their needs and because it is the best available current option, meeting the majority of their individual requirements.
