The Department of Health has announced that two new non-executive directors will join the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence Board.
First up is Professor Finbarr Martin (pictured), a consultant physician in General and Geriatric Medicine at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. He is also Honorary Professor of Medical Gerontology at Kings College London and past President of the British Geriatrics Society.
Bill Mumford completes the hires, who is chief executive of MacIntyre, a service provider for children and adults with learning disabilities and chair of the Voluntary Organisations Disability Group.
This will be the first time NICE will have had a non-executive director from a social care background, after their remit was extended to include social care from 1 April 2013. Martin and Mumford’s role at NICE will see them offering independent advice to the chairman and executive directors.
Professor David Haslam, chair of NICE, said: “I am pleased to welcome Professor Finbarr Martin and Mr Bill Mumford to the NICE Board as non-executive directors. They have extensive experience and are highly regarded in their respective fields, Professor Martin in healthcare and Mr Mumford in social care.
“I am sure they will both play a significant and valuable role in helping to shape the direction of NICE, as we lead the way in encouraging high-quality care for all across the health and social care sectors.”
