Targacept appoints chairman

Clinical-stage biopharma firm Targecept has appointed its non-executive director since 2002 John Richard to be its chairman of the board.

Richard who has served in various executive, director and advisory roles throughout his career will continue to serve on the company’s audit and compensation committees.

“John has made countless contributions to building Targacept since he joined the board in 2002, and we are grateful that we will continue to benefit from his insight and leadership in this expanded role,” said Dr Stephen Hill, Targacept’s president and chief executive.

Richard is currently a partner and director of two life science-focussed investment firms: Phase4 Partners and Georgia Venture Partners. In addition, he is a board member of Biota Pharmaceuticals and Zosano Pharma and serves as an advisor to Albireo and Nabriva Therapeutics.

Earlier in his career Richard was executive VP, Business Development at SEQUUS Pharmaceuticals, where he was responsible for negotiating the acquisition of SEQUUS by ALZA.

Prior to joining SEQUUS Richard headed business development for VIVUS, and Genome Therapeutics, where he was responsible for establishing numerous pharma alliances. He was also the chief executive and co-founder of Impath, which became part of Genzyme.
