Dr Elias Zerhouni has been appointed president of global research and development at Sanofi-Aventis with effect from 1 January 2011.
He will oversee both medicines and vaccines research at the company and takes over from Marc Cluzel, who will resign as executive VP of R&D but will continue to work closely with Elias in an advisory capacity.
Dr Zerhouni has served as scientific advisor to Sanofi’s chief executive Chris Viehbacher since February 2009, during which time the company said he had been instrumental in redesigning its R&D model to foster increased innovation.
“I have had the privilege of working with Elias for a long time. Through his vast experience and visionary approach, he has provided excellent advice and insight and has been central in implementing what is now one of the most promising R&D models in healthcare,” Viehbacher said.
“I am delighted that a world renowned figure such as Elias is onboard to lead and drive our R&D organisation to ensure we make the maximum impact on health and deliver what patients need in the future.”
Dr Zerhouni is currently professor of Radiology and Biomedical engineering and senior adviser for Johns Hopkins Medicine and previously served as director of the US National Institutes of Health from 2002 to 2008.
