EMA elects new vice-chair

The European Medicines Agency has elected Dr Christa Wirthumer-Hoche, the head of the Austrian Medicines and Medical Devices Agency, as its vice-chair for a three-year period. 

Wirthumer-Hoche succeeds Prof Dr Walter Schwerdtfeger, following his retirement from the German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices.

Wirthumer-Hoche studied biochemistry and graduated from the Technical University, Vienna in 1981. From June 1998 until December 2005 she was the head of the Licensing Division for medicinal products, in the unit for Pharmaceutical Affairs in the Austrian Federal Ministry of Health and Women.

Following that she became the head of Institute for Marketing Authorisation of Medicinal Products & Lifecycle Management, prior to heading the Austrian Medicines and Medical Devices Agency.
