Axplora consolidates liver disease API manufacturing in India

Axplora has announced the consolidation of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) manufacturing at its Vizag facility in India as part of a strategy to strengthen global supply and expand production capacity.
UDCA is an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) widely used in medicines for chronic liver and gallbladder diseases. Demand for the therapy continues to grow as diagnosis and treatment of chronic liver conditions increase worldwide.
Production will be transferred from the company’s Farmabios site in Italy to the Vizag facility by the end of 2026. Axplora said the move will create a fully integrated manufacturing platform covering bile sourcing through to API production.
The company has previously invested in expanding capacity at the Indian site, which uses an enzymatic manufacturing process designed to reduce solvent use and simplify production.
Martin Meeson, Chief Executive Officer of Axplora, said: “By consolidating UDCA manufacturing at Vizag, we are creating a more streamlined and scalable supply platform that strengthens resilience, simplifies operations and enhances service for customers worldwide.”
The company said the consolidation would also allow its Farmabios facility to focus more heavily on steroids and highly potent active pharmaceutical ingredients (HPAPIs).
Anant Barbadikar, President of PharmaZell Operations, said the change would provide ncustomers with a fully integrated manufacturing platform, scalable capacity and improved supply-chain resilience.
“Our Vizag site has become an increasingly important strategic hub within Axplora’s global manufacturing network. This consolidation reflects the technical expertise, operational excellence and regulatory track record of our Indian teams,” added Barbadikar.
Axplora said the Vizag facility has already received the necessary regulatory approvals and recently completed a successful US FDA inspection. The company expects the site to support both current demand and future growth in therapies for chronic liver disease.
