NHS launches transparency website

NHS England has launched a new ‘comparison website tool’ that allows health and social care organisations to see how their services compare with those of others.

The MyNHS site (which is currently in beta testing) is designed to be a transparency device that compares on a range of outcomes at both national and regional level.

It has been developed by NHS England, the top commissioning body for the health service, together with the Department of Health (DH), the Health and Social Care Information Service (HSCIC), the Care Quality Commission and Public Health England.

In a statement the DH says that MyNHS gives commissioners, providers and professionals a “central snapshot of published data, to drive improvements in the quality of care”.

The information currently covers hospitals, providers of social care and public health, and supports the wider commitment on ensuring more transparent health and care services.

The data is now available on the increasingly popular NHS Choices website and will be developed further in the coming months to include more areas and reflect feedback from users.

The NHS and the HSCIC got into hot water earlier this year when a giant NHS database that could potentially allow pharma firms access into patient records was delayed for an indefinite period, after doctors and the public raised concerns over privacy.

The care.data system was meant to be launched next month, but there is as yet no confirmed dates as to when this will happen.

The launch of MyNHS may be an attempt to allay these fears by becoming more transparent in its own services, on top of allowing a comparison of health areas.
