A new 28-day pack of Merck Sharp & Dohme's top-selling hypertension treatment Cozaar has been launched in the UK.

The 50mg and 100mg doses of the drug are already available in a convenient 28-day pack, but the 25mg dose has only been dispensed in 7-day packs until now.

The company has introduced the larger size in response to demand from patients and doctors for reduced packaging.

A starting dose of 25mg is indicated for patients over 75 and patients with moderate to severe renal impairment and/or on dialysis.

Cozaar (losartan) has been on the market for 10 years, originally licensed to treat hypertension and is the biggest selling drug in the angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) class in the UK.

Cozaar has two further indications: in stroke protection for hypertensive patients with concomitant left ventricular hypertrophy and also renal protection for type II diabetes patients with nephropathy.

The standard recommended starting dose for patients is 50mg once daily, with appropriate dosage modifications being made in line with subsequent blood pressure monitoring.
