Lilly has launched an international diabetes education programme, the centrepiece of which is a tool for healthcare professionals to conduct group discussions with patients.

The Conversation Map is designed for healthcare professionals to use with small groups of up to 10 patients to get them talking about their condition and its management.

The pharma company is working with Healthy Interactions on the initiative and will launch the health education agency's Conversation Map around the world.

Free training on how to use the table-top Map will be offered to healthcare professionals, first in Europe and then across Asia and Latin America, as it ultimately reaches more than 40 countries.

It's the first offering from Lilly's Diabetes Conversations programme and the company said it would be culturally relevant, customised by country and translated in more than 25 different languages.

Lilly's international marketing director for diabetes Joachim Becker said the programme would provide healthcare professionals with a cutting-edge resource to help people with diabetes.

Healthy Interactions collaborated with a number of leading diabetes experts on the project, including the International Diabetes Federation (IDF).

President of IDF Europe Eberhard Standl said: "Educators need novel tools and resources to extend our capacities to influence patient behaviour and change the course of diabetes. It is our hope that the Conversation Map tools ultimately will improve the quality of life for the millions of people in Europe living with diabetes."

Lilly signed a three-year partnership deal with Healthy Interactions in November last year to become the agency's exclusive diabetes programme partner outside of the US and Canada.

In those two countries Healthy Interaction works with Merck and has already launched its programme.

Andrew Leong-Fern, co-founder of Healthy Interactions, said: "We've already seen the profound impact the Conversation Map tools have made on the lives of people with diabetes and healthcare professionals in North America by dramatically improving patient engagement and supporting behaviour change.

"We're thrilled to partner with IDF Europe and Lilly to provide this innovative educational tool to positively impact millions more worldwide."
