Hundreds vote in UK’s Most Admired Pharma Company poll

Five UK-based pharmaceutical companies have emerged as early contenders to claim the title of Most Admired Company, as voted by the country's industry executives.

Just three weeks into the online Pharmafocus and InPharm.com Career Survey, hundreds of UK pharma executives have completed the questionnaire which is already providing a fascinating snapshot of industry opinion.

Voters are asked a range of questions  - from their thoughts on what makes a good workplace, to what annoys them about their current job, which pharma company they admire most and whether or not the NHS can one day be a world class healthcare system.

"It's early days yet, but we are already building up a really interesting picture of how industry executives perceive UK pharma today, and their place in it," says Andrew McConaghie, editor of Pharmafocus.

"Without giving too much away at this stage, the five companies currently in the lead don't match up exactly with the five biggest companies, so it seems people aren't judging by size alone," he added.

"Voters have also singled out the qualities they admire in these companies, which I think will prove interesting reading for anyone interested in UK pharma and the talented people who make it what it is."

Opinion is currently evenly split between the five choices given on the most admired qualities. However, as voting stands, a 'Rich pipeline/product portfolio' and a 'Strong customer focus' are lagging behind as key qualities, but this could change before voting closes.

The online survey can be found at: www.pharmafocus.com and is entirely confidential to ensure the findings represent as accurate a picture as possible.

Once a voter has chosen their top three most admired companies, the survey asks whether they work for any of these companies. So far, around one third of respondents have placed their own company in the top three, but the remaining two thirds of voters have recognised the admirable qualities of other companies.

Meanwhile, a strong consensus is forming on what the top priorities are for a fulfilling job – and what people find most annoying about their work.

Eighty-one percent of people chose one factor as being particularly important to their motivation, sending out a clear message about job satisfaction.

What this factor is will be revealed when the full survey is published, but two factors  '(My) Contribution recognised and valued' and 'Atmosphere/Corporate culture and values' are currently in equal second place with over 50% of respondents putting them in their top six priorities.

A similar picture is emerging on the question of the most annoying aspects of jobs in the sector, with 'Lack of internal communication' and 'Lack of career development prospects' vying for the second spot in this category.

Everyone who completes the survey can enter our prize draw – the new must-have gadget, the mini iPod, is the star prize, with bottles of champagne to give away to 25 runners up.
