Catalent Pharma Solutions has agreed to sell its printed components business to Dutch packaging giant Clondalkin, which has been steadily boosting its presence in the healthcare sector.

Catalent claims to be the world’s largest provider of pharmaceutical printed components such as cartons, inserts and outserts, labels and booklets, and other custom printed products, with annual sales of around 75 million euros ($100 million).

The acquisition will increase Clondalkin’s healthcare packaging activities to around 260 million euros a year, accounting for 28% of annual turnover. Last year the company had sales of around 850 million euros.

The deal includes a long-term supply agreement in which Clondalkin will continue to provide printed components to Catalent in order to meet the demands of the latter’s custom packaging clients, said the two firms in a joint statement.

Clondalkin has been buying into the pharmaceutical packaging sector of late, having already snapped up Puerto Rico-based Lehigh Press, a specialist in pharmaceutical labels, inserts and outserts, earlier this year via its Keller-Crescent division.

“Over the past five years, we have been the most significant investor in this market,” commented Norbert McDermott, chief executive of the Clondalkin Group.

“Catalent’s printed components … are an excellent strategic fit in complementing Clondalkin’s products and services,” he added.

Buying the Catalent unit brings four additional manufacturing facilities into the Clondalkin fold, including sites in the USA, Puerto Rico and Ireland.

After closing the deal, the packaging giant will operate nine healthcare production facilities in North America, spread across North Carolina, New Jersey, Indiana, Connecticut and Puerto Rico. It will match that with nine facilities in Europe, based in Ireland, Spain, the UK and Poland.
