Takeda selects London for new European business

Japanese pharmaceutical company Takeda has chosen London as the site of its new four million pound European sales and marketing headquarters.

It is the latest move by a pharma company to set up Europe-wide operations in the UK and confirms the country's attractiveness as a location for investment.

The new company will be separate from Takeda's existing operations in the UK  which comprise of the High Wycombe-based UK business and an R&D operation in London.

In a statement, the company said: "Through promoting pan-European strategies from mid and long-term perspectives, the new company will enhance the sales and marketing functions of each subsidiary in the region."

The new company will supervise the business activities of Takeda's six European sales and marketing subsidiaries when it opens its doors in October.

In addition to the UK, Takeda also has commercial operations in France, Germany, Italy, Austria and Switzerland.

UK managing director Satoru Noguchi told Pharmafocus: "There was no reason to choose Paris or Frankfurt - the UK is the kingpin of the European market and from here the new company can look after our European operations.

"We are making continuous investment in the UK and through the new company we can be closer to the European market."

Takeda has not yet settled on someone to lead the new business, but Noguchi said the company's head office was searching for a European candidate to bring local understanding and knowledge to the position.

The new investment is the latest decision by a pharma company to base European operations in the UK.

In January, another Japanese company Eisai announced this year it would open a 75 million pound European headquarters in Hatfield, Hertfordshire. The building, which is due for completion in 2008, will also house its UK sales and marketing, R&D and manufacturing operations.

More recently, in June, ophthalmology specialist Allergan switched its R&D operations from the South of France to Marlow in Buckinghamshire, creating 150 new jobs.
