Healthcare agency Resolute Communications has been named consultancy of the year at the PRWeek awards, believed to be the first time any healthcare specialist agency has won the award.

Established less than four years ago the company has enjoyed rapid growth and co-founders and joint managing directors Paul Blackburn and Anna Korving said the award cements its place in the PR hierarchy and called it a "tremendous accolade".

"We began by trying to build the kind of agency we always wanted to work for, where the focus is on doing great work for great clients, and where we can give our team the kind of rewards they really deserve," they added.

The company's pharma clients include Roche, Shire Pharmaceuticals and UCB, working on a number of major products including Avastin, Tarceva and Risperdal.

The joint managing directors said their success was down to the value of teamwork and their clients and industry colleagues who have had faith in their ideas.

The company claims to have a global scale, and was placed at No. 9 in this year's PRWeek Top 50 healthcare agency listings. Resolute was also highlighted as the fastest growing communications agency in the magazine's Top 100 agencies.

Resolute announced a preferred partner agreement with US specialist agency WeissComm earlier this year. The healthcare boutique has offices in New York and San Francisco, and the two agencies are already working on global programmes for Pfizer and other pharmaceutical companies.

"We've had an incredible first few years, and to be recognised by the industry as the top agency, Consultancy of the Year 2005, is a tremendous accolade – it marks a real watershed for Resolute," said Korving and Blackburn. "We'd like to thank everybody who helped us to achieve our goals – and hope to be celebrating more wins in the future."

Another healthcare agency, Virgo Health PR, was also recognized at the PRWeek Awards. Joint managing director Angie Wiles said the company was absolutely thrilled and extremely proud to be named Specialist Consultancy of the Year.

Meanwhile, Virgo's associate director Caroline Fielding was awarded Young Achiever of the Year, with the judges commending her 'maturity, diversity of skills', concluding: "You can imagine her being a leader."

The McCartney sisters from Belfast were named Communicators of the Year at the ceremony on Tuesday night while Mike Lee, the communications professional behind London's successful Olympic bid, was awarded PR Professional of the Year.
