Public affairs agency Advocate launched

A former Labour Party press officer has launched the first independent public affairs agency dedicated exclusively to healthcare.

Camden-based Advocate's managing director and founder Jamie Holyer said the agency would help to demystify healthcare policy for clients.

"The healthcare policy environment is probably the most exciting and challenging area for public affairs professionals - it is highly regulated, under increasing financial constraint and subject to a difficult government reform agenda with numerous stakeholders.

"The days of political consultancies providing public affairs services to a broad remit of industries are over. To really provide expert and innovative political consultancy requires an in-depth knowledge of the respective policy area."

Holyer began his career as a political researcher and journalist with the BBC and Thames TV before going to work as a press officer for Labour Party HQ and Jonathan Shaw MP.

Following spells as an account director with lobbying agency Political Intelligence and as a senior consultant with Fleishman-Hillard (formerly GPC International), he went back to Labour to work on the party's historic third successive General Election victory in 2005.

Advocate has already signed up its first clients - Bayer's pharmaceutical division, where the agency will be working for its haemotology and cardiology group, UCB Pharma and the Medical Defence Union.

The agency aims to help clients to understand the policy environment in which they are operating and develop and implement strategic communication programmes to influence policy and stakeholders in line with business objectives.
