Practice based commissioning and NICE workshops launched

The impact of practice-based commissioning (PBC) on how NICE guidance is implemented will be explored in a series of regional workshops.

Practice based commissioning was launched by the government in 2005, and puts funding in the hands GPs to redesign NHS services, and allow more patients to be treated outside secondary care.

Now NICE has commissioned the National Prescribing Centre to carry out the new project, which will assess the impact of PBC on the implementation of NICE guidance.

As part of it, the National Prescribing Centre has organised a number of regional events for PBC practitioners, and local leaders in NICE guidance and prescribing in April 2008.

These events will be a platform for sharing current practices, networking and offer the opportunity to identify the key challenges and solutions for the implementation of NICE guidance through practice based commissioning.
