The British government is showcasing its most promising digital health firms at a new centre in China.

The “Healthcare is GREAT [sic]” UK digital health demonstration centre recently opened at Ningbo Number 2 Hospital, in the Zhejiang Province.

The UK government is touting it as a ‘ground-breaking initiative’ and forms part of collaboration between the UK and Zhejiang governments. The centre is set to promote the UK’s expertise in digital healthcare, bringing British life science companies together under one roof.

For the next nine months, the demonstration centre will showcase digital health technologies from leading UK companies. It will allow visitors to observe, learn and interact with the participating British companies and their products and services.

This includes sections such as video-based telemedicine; telehealth; electronic records; medicines management; and big data analytics. The UK groups taking part in the demonstration centre include: BT Health Grey Matters; IXICO; and Keele University.

It is supported by the UK government’s ‘GREAT Britain’ campaign under the Healthcare is GREAT banner, and is a collaborative project between UKTI China; Healthcare UK; the Zhejiang Health and Family Planning Commission; and Ningbo Number 2 Hospital.

It is hoped that this will encourage more China-UK economic relations, as set out during the recent trip that British prime minister David Cameron took to the country earlier this year.

Brian Gallagher, counsellor and campaign strategy director for life sciences in China, says: “The demonstrator centre is a ground-breaking initiative in China as part of long term collaboration between UKTI, Healthcare UK and Zhejiang.

“With the launch of the demonstrator centre, I am sure we will see abundant exciting opportunities arising for the two countries to explore collaboration on the healthcare front.

“I am confident that the demonstrator will go a long way towards strengthening the ties between UK and China’s healthcare industries, ultimately providing a foundation for a better healthcare system in both countries.”

Howard Lyons, managing director of Healthcare UK, adds: “The launch of the demonstrator represents a significant milestone in the developing collaboration between leading British Health IT organisations and progressive healthcare providers in Zhejiang Province.

“I believe the benefits to be gained will lead to a step change in the quality of healthcare available to the citizens of China. We look forward to further successful collaborations in the coming year as part of the agreement signed between Zhejiang Health Bureau and Healthcare UK.”
