Nampak Healthcare plans to invest in a new manufacturing facility in Segensworth, UK, to overcome the limitations of its current site in Portsmouth.

Staff at the existing plant, which manufactures cartons for the pharmaceutical industry, are being consulted about the move to Segensworth, which is located around 10 miles away.

The new purpose-built facility would house all 110 of Nampak’s staff in Portsmouth and could be completed as early as the end of this year if the decision to go ahead is taken. The company employs around 450 staff in the UK, and also operates facilities in Bradford, Bromborough, Liverpool and Newmarket.

The current facility is housed in two separate buildings and does not allow any room for much needed expansion.

Nampak said its development plans call for a significant capital investment in state-of-the-art printing and cutting and creasing technology to handle the growing workload at Portsmouth

A similar strategy is being employed by the company in Germany, where a new pharmaceutical carton facility in Wolfen is being constructed to replace an existing factory in the town.

“This is an exciting opportunity which will enable us to further develop our cartons business to meet the future needs of the healthcare market,” commented Tom Reid, managing director of Nampak Europe.

The plans come in the wake of the December 2010 decision by South African parent company Nampak to sell off Nampak Healthcare and sister company Nampak Cartons – which makes products for the food and beverage sectors – to private investment company Platinum Equity in a deal valued at around £65 million ($106 million). The sale to Platinum is expected to close by the end of February.
