US pharma association PhRMA has appointed John Castellani president and chief executive, with effect from September.

He will join the trade body after nine years of leading Business Roundtable, an association of corporate chief executives, and succeeds PhRMA’s Billy Tauzin who moved to a senior advisory role earlier this year.

“This is an exciting time for our industry, which is leading the way in providing patient-centered health solutions,” said PhRMA board chairman and head of Pfizer Jeff Kindler. “At this critical moment, it’s important that we have the highest standard of leadership in this position. And we have that in John. John is the gold standard, and I’m extremely pleased that he will lead our team.”

PhRMA’s search committee was headed up by AstraZeneca chief executive David Brennan, and he praised Castellani’s “exceptional policy-making experience and integrity”.

“His experience in coalition building and strong reputation of working across the political divide set him apart. He will contribute mightily to our mission in a time of dynamic change.”

Prior to Business Roundtable, Castellani served in leading positions at Tenneco, National Association of Manufacturers and TRW. He began his career as an environmental scientist at General Electric.
